Australian Kangaroo

Australian Kangaroo

Mascot Avro Lancaster R5868

This kangaroo is dressed as a Royal Australian Air Force Flight Sergeant. It was carried on bombing operations by Lancaster R5868 S for Sugar whilst with 467 Squadron RAAF. It is made of pipe cleaners, and sat at the navigator's table.

S for Sugar completed 137 operations during the Second World War. This was the second highest total of any Royal Air Force heavy bomber.

Crewmen said Sugar could fly herself and carried a pilot and navigator just in case! No crewman was killed on Sugar during any of the 137 operations.

This lucky aircraft was preserved after the War and is now displayed at the Royal Air Force Museum London.
